Review: star wars squadrons

Welp there is a new addition to star wars series. Star Wars Squadrons, a fun little game that came out from EA. It seems that the house of mouse was wanting these games to be profitable. First fallen order, now this. Both relatively tight games. But also kinda spars. They feel like EA testing the waters or reluctantly throwing gamers a bone. They clearly want micro transactions in games. EA wouldn't have forwarded games as a service if they didn't. However battlefront failed to fill their coffers and battlefront 2 failed even harder at launch. Disney almost got involved if my memory serves correct. So like fallen order this is the second of this new plan EA has of half appeasement.

The reason I say half is because this focuses around the star fighter combat that seems a lot like how it was in the old Battlefront 2. They even have a game mode that is almost exactly that. Though it does somewhat remind me of the rogue squadron games. they are charging only 39.99 for it so its obviously not full priced. Though this may still seem somewhat overpriced depending on ones own opinions. This includes 2 modes for multiplayer(fleet battles and dogfights), and also a single player.

The single player is fairly nice. Not really much to talk about, it begins during the galactic civil war. Then continues with the new republic. Telling a story of two pilots and squadrons. It has the makings of a betrayal and revenge plot. You begin as the empire on a retaliatory mission for the empire, until your commander defects. Then you give chase with a trench run. After that it skips to the rebellion and you help evac rebel troops and the defector. Is a bit cliché but has its moments. But it is restricted in its story telling by the games design. One such design is you do not walk around the ships or hangers as much as you teleport. IDK if this was placed there for VR support or something. But feels limiting in how it tells the story.

the multiplayer is very fun as well. you have your pilot that is fully customizable and one for both factions. dogfighting is very fun and the Team death match sort of mode. While fleet battles are the attack and defense game mode. This one in particular can be played in ranked battles against other people or against AI. Unfortunately this is where the game sort of falls. because well...it can be really fun in both, but its only two game modes! Hopefully they will add more but just two modes for multiplayer. That's one thin game.

In Conclusion, it is a finely tuned game with very versatile, and sometimes disorienting gameplay. But could be so much more. Keep the quality just add more to do. EA looks like it may be changing but its certainly dragging its feet.
